In the green state of Oregon, with its windswept coastline and diverse climate zones, landscape design requires many considerations that home and land owers might not know to ask about.
Having spent over 3 decades in the beaver state, I have first-hand experience with its plant communities, climate zones, landscapes, and cultures. I found while living in the Willamette Valley college town of Corvallis for example that a larger percentage of residents than in some other states are aware of permaculture and understand the benefits that a professionally designed landscape can provide.
The climate of this part of Oregon is so nice in the summertime yet rainy from Fall through Spring that everyone wants solutions to be able to enjoy outdoor living. This translates into covered patios, sheltered courtyards, indoor-outdoor play spaces, and even edible landscaping that homeowners can enjoy while spending time in their back yards in any weather.
Not as many people know about the value-add of proper landscape design; however, in Oregon I've found a large number of clients seek me out. Property values in the most popular areas of the state tend to be higher, but with a beautiful landscape surrounding a home owners can expect to see up to 15% more when they sell. So the modest investment for quality landscape planning delivers great returns.
Another draw for ecological landscape design in Oregon is the measurable reductions in costs. Expenses like power, water, maintenance, and waste are markedly reduced with permaculture. Because I've been sought out since 2004 for my specialty of combining landscape architecture with permaculture design, home and property owners know they can reap all these benefits while also fitting into the neighborhood.
One client told me his neighbors teased him for having the worst-looking yard on the block before he hired me. After I managed the installation of the plan I created for his front yard, he told me the neighbors called his yard the best on the block. I was not only flattered to have made such a big change for he and his wife, a writer for the show Jeopardy!, but it delighted me that his neighborhood recognized the aesthetic beauty of an ecologically-planned landscape.
Some aspects to consider for implementing landscape design in Oregon:
Oregon's rugged landscape varies widely in terms of climate
Plant choices differ depending on what part of the state you're in
Plant lists found online can be too general
Plants are only part of landscape design
Planting time matters
Hardscape features depend on local and microclimate
