Transforming Your Side Yard With A Driveway Redesign Project
Have you ever looked at your driveway and envisioned it as more than just a place to park your car? Eco-Logic Permaculture & Landscape Design can help you turn that dream into a reality! I want to highlight a past project of mine, where my clients and I combined forces - I did the design and they did the installation - to transform the unused driveway of their small home into a welcoming and functional outdoor living space, perfect for the frequent parties they liked to throw and adding safe play and hangout space for their young son.
The Clients: Creating a Family-Friendly Space
The clients, first-time parents, wanted their driveway to be more than just a parking spot. The city required a driveway to reach all the way back to the garage, however far into a lot it stood. But they didn't regulate use of it. Be sure to check your city's codes before planning a driveway redesign project. My clients desired a space that could function as an extension of their living area, perfect for spending time with their growing family, and it needed to be safe for their son to play in without the risk of him wandering into the street.
DIY vs. Professional: Finding the Right Fit for Your Driveway Redesign
There's a thrill that comes with completing a DIY project, and a driveway redesign can be a rewarding undertaking. However, it's important to consider the scope and complexity of your vision. For smaller projects, like adding a trellis or planting greenery, a DIY approach might be suitable, especially for those who are handy and enjoy a challenge.
However, for more involved projects that include drainage solutions, custom structures, or significant material work, consider partnering with a professional firm. My clients on this project wanted to get their hands dirty by handling the install work themselves (with a little help from the missus' stone mason

father), but they hired me because they understand that I have the experience, expertise, and resources to ensure their project would come out not only beautiful but also functional and long-lasting.
Design Considerations: Collaboration and Multi-Functionality
Given the smaller footprint of a driveway, maximizing space was a key consideration in this case. The design included a custom trellis that fit perfectly within the space, creating a defined patio area. Stormwater features were incorporated to address drainage needs, while other elements added beauty and ecological sustainability.
For example, I specified a weathered wine barrel for rain catchment from the house roof, and we broke up the concrete at the back section nearest to the garage in order to create an "urbanite" patio.
The Results: A Space for Entertaining and Relaxation
The final product was a festive and usable patio. Guests are now greeted by a charming walkway leading to the backyard. The repurposed concrete surface is not only easy on bare feet but also far more aesthetically pleasing, remarkably similar to a flagstone patio. For the spaces in-between the stepping stones, I recommended a few species of tiny plants that can take foot traffic. Multiple seating areas, including a built-in bench attached to the L-shaped trellis, provide ample space for relaxing or entertaining. The rain barrel overflow cleverly redirects water runoff into the planting beds, benefiting both the clients and their neighbors, who had been getting too much water dumped on them prior to the redesign. Finally, a thriving Evergreen Clematis vine adds a touch of flowering greenery and sweet-scented dappled shade during the hot summer months.
Overall, this was a radical transformation with a relatively small amount of effort. Getting the family involved made it more fun and gave them memories to last years. I always enjoy seeing my clients work directly on a project.
